Ireland provided an impressive venue in Lough Mask for the 2018 Spring International and thoughout competition week good quality trout were found in many areas of the lough.  The match was fished on a catch and release basis with all fish being measured and released.  The minimum size was 30cm and 20 points were added to the length of each qualifying fish to give a points based result.

The first official practice day on the Wednesday was subject to strong sw winds and many competitors opted not to go out.  The wind dropped on the Thursdayand generally conditions were good.  Overnight the wind picked up considerably but fortunately it dropped gradually on the Friday morning and the match was able to start on time.  The wind picked up again around noon and remained strong throughout match day.
As the competitors returned to the shore at the end of the session it was clear that Ireland had won convincingly with 20 trout more than any other country.  Their 14 anglers caught 45 trout to take the gold medal.  Wales were second with 25 trout, England were third with 23 and Scotland were fourth with 20.

All members of the Ireland team performed well with their David Egan winning the Brown Bowl for the best basket with a catch of 8 trout.

Four of the Ireland team finished in the top 10 and with all 14 of their team fininshing in the top 35 this was a well deserved victory.

Scotland's top rod and winner of the Silver Salver was Andy Dunn of Change FF AC with a total of 4 trout.  Andy also won the trophy for the longest fish of the day with trout that measured at 51.2cm.

Top rod for England was Iain Barr with 6 trout and top rod for Wales was Richard Hooper with 5 trout.
